Our research focuses on the development of novel computational models, optimization techniques and systems analysis & design methods for complex engineered systems. We seek to achieve a balance between theory, computation, and case studies through our synergistic research that emphasizes both fundamentals and applications. At the application level, we concentrate our efforts on energy systems engineering, sustainable process systems engineering and enterprise-wide optimization. Particular research interests lie in 1) optimal design and operations of biomass-to-biofuels supply chains, 2) process synthesis and optimization of integrated biorefineries, 3) life cycle assessment and environmental systems analysis, 4) environmentally-conscious design and operations of chemical processes and energy systems, and 5) design, planning, scheduling and inventory management under uncertainty in enterprise-wide supply chain optimization. We are also interested in applying large-scale computational modeling and optimization techniques to complex biological systems. At the fundamental level, we focus on the development of mathematical programming techniques and systems engineering tools to support research in the aforementioned application areas. Special emphasis is placed on the development of fast computational strategies for large-scale mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) and global optimization problems.
